Poway High School Choral Department has 4 choirs that meet the UC/CSU “F” requirement. All choirs learn music theory and are performance based – meaning participation in all rehearsals, concerts and festivals is required.
BEGINNING CHOIR is open to both men and women in grades 9-12. There is no audition requirement.
CONCERT CHOIR is next choir in sequence, for grades 9-12. An audition is required and knowledge of music theory is absolutely necessary. While the Concert Men and Concert Women may meet at separate class periods, this is a large combined mixed voice choir.
WOMEN’S ENSEMBLE is the advanced choir open to women in grades 10-12 through audition only. Outside time is required. Activities will include school and community performances. The Women’s Ensemble represents the school at district and state levels in adjudicated festivals.
DIE LIEDER SINGERS is the top choir at Poway High, open to grades 10-12 by audition only. Advanced choral and vocal technique is taught in a small choir setting. Outside time is required. Activities will include school and community performances. The Die Lieders represent the school at district and state levels in adjudicated festivals.
“There are four concerts a year: Fall, Winter and Festival are concert dress – robes, gowns, and tuxs and Spring is a fun-filled extravaganza.” Last year’s theme was Rock and Roll. Past themes include Disney, Best of Broadway, Rock ‘n Elvis featuring the music of Elvis, the Beach Boys, Doo-Wop, Jersey Boys and more.
Die Lieders and Women’s Ensemble have the opportunity to participate in a Spring Tour to compete in musical festivals. Past tours include trips to Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, and Washington D.C. There are multiple ways we ask the students and friends to help in raising funds to defray the cost of participating.
Choral students have the opportunity to audition for the Southern California Regional Honor Choir and All-State Honor Choir sponsored by the Southern California Vocal Association (SCVA) and American Choral Directors Association (ACDA).
